Suitable Outboard motor size for 12 foot dingy?
Hi,
I’ve bought a second hand 12 foot aluminium dingy. I need to buy an outboard for it.
A friend of mine has a similar Boat and has a 9 horsepower outboard. He says it’s a little underpowered.
I have found a 20 horsepower Mercury short shaft outboard for sale. Is 20hp motor too big for the 12 foot tin boat though?

Yes 20 hp is, way , to big . There should be a vessel tag on the hull that tells you what motor rating that you can legally mount on your bout. My old 12′ duracraft was only rated for a 10 horse.
