Best Time to Sail in Key West?
I’m planning a sailing trip with my family. Nothing intense just a charter around Key West for a few days. Thinking of going August but I’m afraid there won’t be any wind to sail. September is Hurricane season so that’s out. Is late October good? I still want it to be bathing suit weather. Is October ok for that?
Well first off you should realize that hurricane season in Key West starts in May and ends in November. Hurricanes shouldn’t be your worry though. These days you get enough warning to avoid hurricanes. If you’re still unsure just look into cancellation insurance in the event of a hurricane, but I don’t think you’ll have a problem. The broker doesn’t want you out on his Boat in a hurricane either.
Now as far as bathing suit weather goes, any time of the year is great in Key West. In January the average temperature will be 70F. That’s the coldest month, and the water temperature is about that high too. I think your best bet would be in April. The reason is because that appears to be the month with the best wind, and it’s after all the snow birds from up north have gone home, so you’ll probably find cheaper prices. The temps and winds in February and March look decent too if you need alternatives.
