Do 2 stroke outboards have a separate oil tank?
I’ve owned smaller outboards and I just premixed the fuel and oil. I just bought a new Boat and it has a Johnson 150 hp motor on it, but has separate fuel and oil tanks. Does this mean it’s a 4 stroke, or does the motor pull up the needed fuel and oil from the separate tanks?
If it’s a brand new johnson, then it’s a 4-stroke.
Otherwise, yes,2-stroke johnson v6 outboards have separate external oil tanks (excepting the early v-6 models which were pre-mix). The fuel pump draws from the oil reservior and mixes the fuel before sending it on to the carbs.
Fill the oil reservior with TCW3-certified oil. the warning horn will sound a beep every couple minutes when to signal low oil level. A steady beep-beep-beep indicates an oil pump malfunction or fuel restriction, and a constant tone means overtemp.
Use only fresh 87-octane gasoline, and the champion spark plug recommended in your manual. Change the water pump impeller every couple years, and the gear oil annually.
The older VRO (variable raio oiling) systems had an undeserved reputation for unreliability, so many owners disabled the oil side of the pump and premix the fuel. The bad reputation carried over to the later OMS (oil metering systems) which are really quite reliable but expensive to replace, so many of these motors have been converted to premix.
