Can I run an outboard engine for 5-10 seconds without water?
I need to check a fuel pump for my 6 hp Johnson Seahorse. Can I safely run the engine without water for a short while just to check if the motor starts? 5-10 seconds should be ample time to confirm that it is properly connected.
No. Damage to the water pump impeller can occur immediately if the outboard is run without water. Tests have concluded that most water pump damage happens within the first 10 seconds of start-up. You must either immerse your gearcase to above the anti-ventilation plate, or use a flush attachment (muffs) to provide a good flow of water.
You don’t have to run the engine to check the fuel pump. Make sure the stop switch is activated, and remove the spark plugs. Remove the outlet line from the fuel pump, and install a piece of clear fuel line about 18″ long on the outlet nipple. Put the open end of the clear line in a container to avoid fuel spills. Pump the primer ball until fuel begins to flow through the clear line. Now pull the starter cord as if to start the engine. If the pump is OK, you will see fuel pulse through the line.
Remember to have a fire extinguisher on hand anytime you are working with open fuel.
